Should Android apps list minimum requirements?

Given the stunning diversity of Android handsets, it's not surprising that not all Android apps run well on all Android devices. But so far, information about which hardware or version of the Android operating system is required to support specific apps isn't consistently available. Poorly performing apps can drain your battery and cause other functional problems -- and I've seen this happen on my Android phone. Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha recently blamed apps for causing performance problems that led to 70% of all Motorola Android device returns, according to PC World.

Sony: PC game network was also hacked

Sony said the Internet security breach targeting its networks was more extensive than originally thought. Hackers also gained access to databases containing subscriber information for Sony Online Entertainment, a San Diego subsidiary that makes online multiplayer games for computers and the PlayStation 3. The Sony division took its Web services offline Monday. That shutdown came 12 days after Sony Computer Entertainment disconnected the PlayStation console game network and Sony Network Entertainment shut down Qriocity media streaming services.

Whoa Zaxxon. Time Pilot. Venture. Turbo. I had forgotten how much these games rocked. It was a refreshing blast from the past.;I got back home and a buddy of mine said, Dude, dont you have the emulators Well, duh He booted up his PC and a few minutes later I was up to my ears in classic console and arcade games. Sure, some of them were a tad buggy or lacked sound, but the majority were just as good as Id remembered and ran very smoothly. Quake, shmakethose little guys in Defender need my help.

What's next for downloadable games?

From the Nintendo 3DS's ability to grab titles on demand to the increasing popularity of retail sites like Steam and Direct2Drive.com, downloadable games will be everywhere in 2011. The days when you had to visit your local store, buy a title and insert a disc into your console to play a game are long gone. Thanks to new episodic titles ("Back to the Future," "Jurassic Park"), popular indie PC games ("Minecraft," "Recettear") and a growing range of smartphone apps and console-exclusive downloads, digital game distribution continues to grow.

Four new games for armchair generals

For gamers, the urge to conquer and pillage dates back to time immemorial. Tabletop amusements like chess and its numerous variants have enthralled players for centuries. Given their often-complex rules and cluttered pieces, military simulations were among home computing's earliest killer apps, giving rise to popular publishers such as SSI and MicroProse. But despite a rapid retail decline in the late '90s that forced many titles out of stores and into the hands of niche online publishers like Matrix Games and HPS Simulations, "wargames" are still going strong today.

'Civilization' gets social in moving from PC to Facebook

By Larry Frum, Special to CNN | July 6, 2011
What happens when Sid Meier's classic PC game "Civilization" meets the home of "FarmVille?" The result is "Civilization World" -- or "Civ World" for short -- and it's a more social, Facebook version of the global-domination game that has been addicting players since 1991. The new game, which launched Wednesday, also takes the power away from the individual player and forces you to cooperate with people you might not even know. In this way, it comes off as something un-"Civ"-like.

by Nash Werner From... Homeworld screenshotnn;IDG Not since the announcement of Warcraft II have I been so excited about an upcoming realtime strategy game. Even the other editorialtype primates around the office here are salivating in anticipation of Homeworlds release. ;Homeworlds developer, Relic Entertainment, mustve sold its soul to the gods of game design because Homeworld not only has an amazinglooking 3D graphics engine, but also a great storyline. In a nutshell, youve just found out that your entire species was driven from its homeworld generations ago, left in exile with no knowledge of its cultural history.

Five games to watch from GDC 2012

Apple's new iPad wasn't the only game in town this week. More than 18,000 videogame makers gathered in San Francisco at the 26th annual Game Developers Convention (GDC 2012) to discuss the future of interactive entertainment. While there was plenty of talk about the explosion of casual and social games and how new smartphones and tablets are luring even more users into gaming, there were also plenty of brand new "AAA" games debuting at the Moscone Center and surrounding area hotels.
